Book description:
Monography of the NKVD prison in Toszek (German: Tost) in the Gliwice (German: Gleiwitz) region. The prison was in operation between May and November 1945. Approximately 5 thousand people were held there, mainly from Saxony, Brandenburg, Lower and Upper Silesia, detained as part of the so called rear of the front cleansing campaign. Some detainees were transported to Toszek/Tost from the NKVD prison in Bautzen. The facility was placed in the psychiatric hospital building, in which Germans had earlier held British and French civilian internees, later on also POWs, including Soviet ones. Brutality of the NKVD and very poor bad living conditions caused the death of approximately 3 thousand detainees. They were burried in the mass graves on the outskirts of Toszek. The book discusses the findings based on the IPN archival sources, Polish state archives, German records, and the State Archive of the Russian Federation in Moscow.
