Book description:
The author synthetically presents the fate of Poles and Jews in Poland occupied by the Germans during World War II. It focuses on the help that Poles provided to Jews during the Holocaust. It shows the efforts of the Polish Underground State and the “Żegota” Council to Aid Jews set up by them, as well as the actions of ordinary people who, on their own, risking their lives, saved their Jewish fellow citizens from extermination. Particular attention is paid to the village of Markowa in Podkarpacie, where 25 Jews were hiding. The culmination of the book are the events of 24 March 1944, when for helping Jews, the Germans killed Józef and Wiktoria Ulma and their six small children, as well as everyone they hid on their farm - eight people from the Szall and Goldman families. The book contains many documentary photos.
