The publication contains an edition of 194 accounts concerning help provided to Jews by Poles in the Warsaw District of the General Governorate between 1939 and 1945. These materials - now stored in the collection of the Archives of the Institute of National Remembrance - were collected by the Central Commission for the Investigation of Nazi Crimes in Poland, as part of a long-term investigation led by prosecutor Wacław Bielawski. The authors of the testimonies are both Poles and Jewish Holocaust survivors. Although a large part of the edited sources deal with events taking place in Warsaw, many are devoted to rescue cases in provincial towns of the district, located, among others, in the occupation districts of Garwolin, Grójec, Łowicz, Mińsk Mazowiecki, Siedlce, Sochaczew, Sokołów etc. Their topics include food aid, preparing false documents, facilitating journeys to other areas, and finally hiding people persecuted by the Germans in flats, houses, outbuildings, etc. The testimonies are accompanied by extensive scientific material concerning, among other things, the post-war contacts between survivors and rescuers, and the honouring of the latter with the titles of Righteous Among the Nations.
