Book description:
The publication is a translation into German of a book published in 2016 by the IPN Katowice branch and the Silesian Institute in Opole, entitled: “Górny Śląsk w Polsce Ludowej. Tom 1. Przełomy i zwroty” [“Upper Silesia in People’s Poland. Volume 1. Breakthroughs and Turns”], ed. by Adam Dziurok and Bernard Linek, containing 14 texts describing the specificity of Upper Silesia, the regional conditions and repercussions of key events in the history of the communist system and Poland in 1945-1989. Among other things, it includes texts about the “Polish months” (1956, 1968, 1970, 1980, 1981, 1989) in Upper Silesia, the so-called liberation by the Red Army and the beginnings of communist rule, the millennium celebrations and the visit of Pope John Paul II to the region. The articles are enriched with source texts and rich iconography. The publication is of a popular science nature and its aim is to bring the subject in question closer to a German-speaking audience.
The co-publisher of the book is the Silesian Institute.
